Thursday, May 03, 2007Grind the Gorge Article(Note: Original article online at http://www.register-herald.com/archivesearch/local_story_123225957.html) A group of mountain bikers invites other cycling enthusiasts to join them on a Grind the Gorge adventure May 19 to raise money for some local charities. The Raleigh County Cycle Club, ACE Adventures in Fayetteville, Digital Beckley and Ride N Slide in Beckley will raise money through sponsorships to benefit the Women’s Resource Center, the American Cancer Society, the New River Ranch in Fayetteville and a fourth charity to be announced. "Mainly this year, we’re looking for riders to build this event so we could do a ride like this annually," said Mark Wray, a member of the cycle club. "We want to raise some awareness about the health benefits of biking and to raise awareness of some of the needs in our communities as well." Riders will gather about 8 a.m. at the Grandview Park Visitors Center and leave by 9 a.m. to ride through a specific route through the gorge to Prince, McKendree, Thurmond, Minden and up to ACE Whitewater Adventures in Fayetteville. "We wanted to design a ride that wouldn’t be extremely technical," said Mike Crum, one of the organizers. "This is a ride that anyone from a high school kid to a 60-year-old in good shape could do." However, the ride will challenge every rider, Wray said. "There will be experienced riders who want to bike up that 1,200-foot hill as fast as they can, and there will be beginners or intermediates who will feel a sense of accomplishment if they just make it up there," he said. Participants should have their bikes in mint condition for the 20- to 25-mile ride, Crum said. "The first 3 miles are downhill all the way. You need good brakes on your bike," he said. "We want to keep the climbing as simple as possible." There will be six checkpoints along the way, and experienced riders will follow the group in case anyone needs help. Bikers will find a fruit table near the end of the grind, Crum said. "This will be an opportunity for people to recharge before that last hurdle." Once they reach ACE Adventures, there will be accommodations for showers, bike washes, and vendors will be on hand with a vast array of food. "This will be a lot of fun, and it’s a great way to get people outdoors to enjoy what will hopefully be good weather. We hope to make this an annual event," Crum said. Sponsor sheets can be downloaded from www.beckleyevents .com. Tax receipts will be available for sponsors. The group has enlisted the help of McDonald’s, Kroger, Ride N Slide Sports and Digital Beckley, but more corporate sponsors are needed, Crum said. "We’d like to get as many corporate sponsors as possible to make this a really nice event," Wray said. For more information, call Wray or Crum at 255-2230. — E-mail: bdavis@register-herald.com |
