Saturday, November 11, 2006Beaver Family Clinic Redeveloped(Note: Original article online at http://www.register-herald.com/archivesearch/local_story_315210917.html) New Web site has state-of-the-art features, information and services By Fred Pace Register-Herald business editor Drs. Nayan and Bella Zinzuwadia of Beaver Clinic in Raleigh County say an integral role of the doctor caregiver is also one of educator. "We want to also educate patients and family members about their bodies, health and illness, as well as giving them easy access to information," Dr. Nayan Zinzuwadia said. "When it comes to health care, knowledge is more than just power. It’s peace of mind. The more informed people feel about their health, the more comfortable they feel making health care decisions. In addition, when it comes to the health of a loved one, reliable information from a trusted source can be the difference between needless worrying and positive action." Ideally, the trusted source would be an individual’s personal physician. However, Zinzuwadia says sometimes a timely or lengthy consultation isn’t practical or possible. "Even in those cases where a medical consultation is possible, it’s not uncommon for people to formulate additional questions after the consultation," he said. "We wanted to give people a reliable and trusted source of information without having to always come to the clinic in person." In May, the doctors approached Mark Wray with Digital Beckley to see what enhancements could be made to the clinic’s Web site, www.beaverfamilyclinic.com. "We did a lot of research and looked at well over 100 medical-type Web sites to see what others were doing," Wray said, adding most sites are no more than online brochures. "Most were not very good," he said. "We decided to take a streamlined approach that would give patients and visitors to the Web site more features, more information and provide easy access to online services the clinic wanted to offer." What Digital Beckley created for Beaver Clinic was an "online digital office." Wray said two initial goals for the new site was to provide an electronic portfolio for patients as well as electronic medical education and information. "Patients can set up their own electronic portfolio and the clinic would then be able to add that information to their electronic medical records system," Wray said. "This site is integrated with the EMR system." Additionally, patients and visitors can make online appointment requests, view patient test results online, take advantage of an online prescription service, make comments or complaints, have easy access to medical information and previous visits to the clinic, change insurance information, have access to comprehensive medical health links and research topics with a searchable knowledge base. Wray says the new site is loaded with medical information, services and features, yet it is focused towards the general public as well. "Beaverfamilyclinic.com is the Internet’s comprehensive medical source for people who want to research a variety of medical and health subjects," he said. "Individuals can peruse the site at their own pace, searching for information that will enlighten their decision-making processes or simply satisfy their curiosity. They can research ailments, treatments and medications. Moreover, when the search for one answer raises even more questions, they can research those questions with the click of a mouse." It is this dynamic interactivity that is the heart of the new site. "It’s what sets it apart from all the other medical Web sites we researched," Wray said. "It provides easy-to-read, in-depth, authoritative medical information for consumers via a robust, user-friendly, interactive Web site." Patients and visitors to the site receive high-quality information specific to their circumstances. They can interact. They can ask different questions and take the conversation in the direction they choose. "A visit to www.beaverfamilyclinic.com can’t replace a one-on-one consultation or a needed visit to the clinic," Zinzuwadia was quick to point out. "However, it can help make people better informed about the health and medical issues facing them. It is this knowledge that empowers them to make better decisions." The site is constantly updated and managed in real time by clinic doctors and office staff with the latest patient and medical information. "This site does not take the place of the clinic," Zinzuwadia added. "We want to make sure patients understand this, but without question the site enhances the clinic’s services by allowing patients and families to acquire higher levels of knowledge. This affords patient understanding, comfort about decision-making processes and satisfaction about self-empowerment related to their own, friends’ and family members’ health." When it comes to privacy issues, the site features the latest in encrypted security. "The patient’s privacy is protected by a 128-bit encryption," Wray said. "Patients have their own passwords and have access to an overview, but not detailed medical transcripts." The clinic is accepting new patients and there are also plans to expand the facility in the near future. "We have many new and exciting things happening at the Beaver Clinic," Zinzuwadia said. "We invite the public to visit our facility and our new online digital office to see all we have to offer."
